The decarbonisation of heating
The challenge
In 2023, German heating supply companies are faced with new challenges such as the Climate Protection Act and the gas crisis. The phase-out of fossil fuels requires a rapid transformation, but how can decades of gas-based infrastructure be transformed in just two decades? We are working with municipal utilities on projects to decarbonise the heating supply and find answers to these questions.
The solution
Our projects begin with a building-specific analysis of the heating requirements on-site and the preparation of a heating requirement register using our tool, the Fichtner Heat Planner, applied to a digital twin of the area under investigation. In workshops involving suppliers, we develop a future supply structure based on building data and various generation potentials. We translate this structure into investment requirements, a transformation plan, the impact on the electricity grid, and assist in the development of new business models and competences.
The conclusion
Our holistic approach allows for a comprehensive insight into heat supply transformation from the supplier’s perspective. The results provide the basis for specific implementation projects and an objective discussion among local authorities, heating suppliers, and policymakers.
