Analysis of market potential for climate-neutral heating solutions

The challenge
Transforming Germany's heating grids to climate neutrality is a major challenge for energy suppliers — but it also offers them the opportunity to tap into new business areas. The project aim was to identify the potential market for our client on the basis of climate-neutral heating solutions. This prompted the development of a standardized planning methodology to address the heating business sector across all subsidiaries and regional companies.
The solution
We first broke the market down into five core supply segments:
- installation of new heating networks in existing buildings
- installation of heating networks in new construction
- expansion of existing heating networks
- development of customized property solutions for industrial clients
- development of customized property solutions for the commercial sector.
In the next step, for each heat supply segment we assessed the total heat demand in Germany: The basis for these calculations was a Germany-wide, building-focused heat register and a comprehensive sector-specific needs analysis for individual clients. From this, we derived the attainable market share for each company in the context of an analysis of competitiveness and capacity.
To conclude, we developed a standardized heating project model to plan the ramp-up to address this business opportunity. Augmented with key techno-economic data from our many years of project experience, this model was adopted as the companies' new planning standard. It enables our client to plan its investments, personnel needs and fuel requirements, and thus to determine the total heating costs per project or supply task.
The conclusion
Thanks to our support, our client was able to make a robust assessment of the market potential for climate-neutral heating solutions in Germany. In addition, a standardized, resilient planning standard was created and implemented at all subsidiaries and regional companies.
